If I can Aus,if not SA,if not between NA or Ant. If i get either Aus or SA 1st i normally take the other one, and the Ant Aus combo is always good  :). Never really go for Asia or Europe since it seems tons of people go there, and more recently I haven't gone for Africa since it seems like a hotspot

Round 1 i always try to get 11 income, but if that isnt possible i normally take a country in my starting continent that i aim for.
Before i went for SA alot, but lately ive felt that aslong as you dont have any good oppononet vs u in NA, NA is alot better to go for instead of SA. Normally you wont have anyone attacking you early game, except for SA. If you place out just a few rifles in defense, that will usually discourage the europe player to get into NA, and im not talking about having the whole continent. Normally the time i go for SA is when i got all countries except Greenland/alaska and canda. Usually im working on one of them though. At this time, even a good SA player wont be strong, and unless he started attacking me, he will be trying to gain territory elsewhere, and those units elsewhere wont make much use in defending, even him spending 10g elsewhere helps loads, when you do your initial attack, aslong as you hold one country in sa you will have crippled him alot, and as said, its key to have just a few riflemen placed as psychological places so you dont get attacked by someone else, dont cover all spots, but make it look like you are still strong.

Starting in asia, gives you a big risk of becoming one of the small powers, since alot of ppl like to take at least one of those 2 gold countries, or any of the smaller ones except china. You can fight yourself through it, and gain the asia income pretty fast, but asia is a strong continent late game imo, but not early game, since there is so much more potential in other continents. Say africa/ant combo, or NA/SA, or Aus/ant. Ant/sa i dont like going in ship games, but it works good in transport.

SA then NA, or Aus then Ant.
I prefer not to start in Ant if possible because if someone gets Aus/SA then they can come rape you.

Asia isn't great, Africa isn't great, going for Europe = Instant Loss :P

I like going for SA  till I got it all and If I see there is just 1 player who is taking NA is a bit risky to go and attack if he isn't a nuub but If I see there are 2 players fighting for NA then I go and attack and take some teritory from 1 of them and in 99% of cases I take the whole NA and 1% if tht player is really good who left I ask for peace [ atm bcs I have higher income and can strike him lately ]

Europe is the most risky continent to start . If you get another 2 players fighting for europe till you waste time to defeat em is like Instand loss - if is no one or just another 1 and you can pwn him and take whole europe = Instant Win.

Transonly: Antartica is by far the best continent to start with.

Classic: Really depends on what's going on in the map.

Hard to say, i usually want to start with SA or AUS, because it aint to crowded in the beginning and is easy to grab in just a few turns, later i strike some continent were two players are fighting eachother, because we all know that is like taking candy from little children. =), if i succeed i get a smaller continent and a regular one which normally doesnt make me the main target for gangbang, also when taking the bigger continent i can afford losing aus/SA if it would happen that someone attacks them when im busy stealing candy.

I find going for Europe and Asia has its benefits. You can scare people from expanding towards the biggest bulk on the map as well as retreat or fight for one of those continents if all goes poorly. Parts of Europe and parts of asia are amazingly easy to defend in my opinion. Also you can appear small and still work towards a high income very quickly.
I love SA but if you can't get it fast enough you can get stuck. Same with Aussie but if you can't take that fast enough then, your probably not worthy of 1st place.
If someone can show how to take NA as your first continent effectively then that would be awesome because I can't figure it out because any other person that brings troops in can easily turtle somewhere in America or Canada.

I say africa is the worst, not that bad in Tp mode though since its easy to turtle but its the worst. Its a hub for the rest of the world

Antarctica is to easy to cut off and to annoying to invade(not hard just annoying) so i am indifferent to it.

*turtle-ing is bunching up and massing your army in a tight space for defense.

i personally find that sa or aus is great to take for first zone but i also do enjoy going for africa when its not being fought for it is very easy to defend if you know how to defend well and as long as you watch the map you can see almost any attack coming before they get close then ant is a great second area to get if not being fought over but sometimes na is great to have with africa if you can then you have 2 good spots to hit sa from making a easy 3 continents gained

1 SA - Can be taken by the end of turn 3
2 Afr - Good central position
3 Ant - Great position for TP games, alright for other
4 Aus - Quick, cheap, and easy, somewhat out of the way

if you have a realy good ant start i believe you can take it by end of turn 3 possibly 4 and if you cant get first it is a great secondary location you have easy access to africa sa and aussie and if ppl are busy you can even slip a boat or 2 up near na and you can hit the spot above central to the west aka the bottom most west america spot and normaly take over the whole area from there it seems most the time people will seldom put any defense in that spot for w.e reason i dont know but its very good spot to hit na from when not defended heavily
